My love affair with maps began in the sixth grade. It was the first introduction I ever had to the world of maps. Ever since that time, I have always been a fan of mapping and the ability to draw a map was a gift that I have taken to heart.
I’m not sure how true this is, but I believe maps are still important in today’s world. As the web has developed, so have our devices. The more we have that ability to draw a map, the more we can see the world in ways we can’t before. Even if you only use maps for recreation, they still serve a purpose.
The reason maps have become a necessity is that they seem to be the closest thing to any other method of building anything. Since you know what tools you can use to build a map, it means you can build it yourself. I found this a few months ago when I was looking for a new hobby, I decided to try using two different tools to build a map.
I could start with just any map maker, and I could create my own maps all the time, but it’s a little overwhelming. I realized that I could actually use a tool called a “drawing tool” to do that. And now when I’m bored, I just draw, I have a map of a place I remember from when I was a kid. I have no idea why, but I feel like I’m doing something useful.
Mapen is an open-source tool that allows to generate maps from any vector map, and its open-source. The map generator is based on the GIS software package QGIS, and its free to use. After you install Mapen and import a vector map, you can choose between different kinds of map styles, create a map, and save it for later usage. Mapen is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
I’d say that that sounds like a great way to do something useful. But I feel like I’m doing something not so useful. Because now I’m stuck with a bunch of empty maps that I can’t even edit. Like I need to figure out how to make this map a little more interesting.
You can use Mapen to create maps. But because I like to do a lot of edits on my maps, I don’t have the time to create them all. So I’m stuck with an app that doesnt offer much.
